If you’ve ever sat in a salon chair and heard words like “keratin,” “smoothening,” or “re-bonding” thrown around  and nodded along without really knowing the difference  you’re not alone. These are three of the most popular hair treatments in India, and they are often confused for the same thing.

They are not the same thing.

Each one works differently, suits different hair types, and gives very different results. This guide breaks it all down in simple, honest language  so whether you’re a client trying to make the right choice, or a student learning the basics of professional hair care, you’ll walk away knowing exactly what each treatment does.

First, Why Do People Get These Treatments?

Most people seek out these treatments for one or more of these reasons:

  • Their hair is naturally curly, wavy, or frizzy and hard to manage daily
  • They spend too much time blow-drying or straightening every morning
  • They want smooth, shiny, low-maintenance hair
  • They’ve seen results on someone else and want the same look

All three treatments  keratin, smoothening, and rebonding can help with frizz and manageability. But how they help, how long results last, and what your hair looks and feels like afterward is where they differ significantly.

Keratin Treatment

What It Is

Keratin is a protein that your hair is naturally made of. Over time, heat styling, chemical processes, sun exposure, and pollution break down the keratin in your hair, leaving it dry, frizzy, and dull. A keratin treatment essentially refills that lost protein.

The treatment coats each hair strand with a liquid keratin formula, which is then sealed in using a flat iron at high heat. The result is smoother, shinier, and more manageable hair.

What It Does to Your Hair

Keratin does not straighten your hair completely. If you have wavy hair, it will become less wavy. If you have curly hair, it will become looser and more defined rather than pin-straight. The goal is to reduce frizz and improve texture, not change the fundamental structure of the hair.

How Long It Lasts

Typically 3 to 6 months, depending on how often you wash your hair and whether you use sulfate-free shampoo (which helps the treatment last longer).

Who It’s Best For

  • People with frizzy, dry, or dull hair
  • Those who want to reduce styling time without a drastic change
  • Anyone who wants softer, healthier-looking hair
  • People who swim frequently or live in humid climates

What to Expect After

Your hair will feel silky and look noticeably shinier. You’ll still have some natural movement and texture  just without the frizz. Most people love how manageable their hair becomes without it looking too processed.

One Thing to Know

Many keratin treatments contain formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing chemicals, which is why some salons offer “formaldehyde-free” versions. If you have sensitivities or are concerned about chemicals, always ask your stylist about the specific product being used.

Hair Smoothening

What It Is

Hair smoothening is a middle ground between keratin and rebonding. Like keratin, it uses a protein-based formula to coat and condition the hair. But smoothening treatments typically have a mild chemical component that relaxes the hair slightly more than pure keratin does.

What It Does to Your Hair

Smoothening gives you straighter, smoother hair than a keratin treatment but not as pin-straight as rebonding. If your natural hair has medium-level curls or frizz, smoothening can bring it close to straight while still maintaining some softness and natural bounce.

It also adds a healthy-looking shine and significantly cuts down drying and styling time.

How Long It Lasts

Around 4 to 6 months. Like keratin, it fades gradually as you wash your hair, rather than growing out with a visible line.

Who It’s Best For

  • People with moderately curly or very frizzy hair
  • Those who want straighter hair without the high commitment of rebonding
  • Anyone who prefers a natural look rather than very pin-straight hair

What to Expect After

Hair will look smoother and feel softer than keratin results, with a more visibly straight appearance. You’ll have very little natural curl remaining, but the hair won’t look stiff or unnatural.

Rebonding

What It Is

Rebonding is the most chemically intense of the three treatments. It literally breaks the natural bonds inside your hair and restructures them in a straight pattern. This is why the results are so dramatic and long-lasting  the actual internal structure of your hair has been chemically changed.

The process involves applying a relaxer or softener to break the bonds, combing the hair straight, applying neutralizer to re-set the new straight bonds, and then sealing with a flat iron.

What It Does to Your Hair

Rebonding gives you permanently straight, pin-straight hair until new hair grows in. There is no natural curl or wave left. The hair lies flat and smooth, with a very sleek appearance.

How Long It Lasts

The treatment itself is permanent on the hair that was treated. New hair growing from the roots will be in its natural texture, so you’ll start seeing a line of difference (roots versus treated hair) over time. Most people go back for touch-ups on the roots every 6 to 12 months.

Who It’s Best For

  • People with very curly or extremely frizzy hair who want a completely straight result
  • Those who are committed to the maintenance routine required
  • People who don’t mind the grow-out process

What to Expect After

Your hair will be very straight and sleek immediately. However, rebonded hair requires careful maintenance; you typically cannot wash or tie your hair for 2 to 3 days after the treatment. Over time, if not well cared for, rebonded hair can become dry or damaged, especially at the ends.

Common Questions

Can I colour my hair before or after these treatments?

It’s generally recommended to colour your hair before a keratin or smoothening treatment — never on the same day. For rebonding, wait at least 2 weeks before or after colouring, as the combination of chemicals can be very harsh on the hair.

Will these treatments damage my hair?

Keratin is generally considered the least damaging and can actually improve hair health. Smoothening is mildly chemical but manageable with good aftercare. Rebonding carries the highest risk of damage, especially if done on already-coloured or chemically-treated hair. The quality of the product and the skill of the person applying it matters enormously.

How do I maintain the results?

All three treatments benefit from:

  • Sulfate-free, paraben-free shampoo
  • Regular deep conditioning or hair masks
  • Avoiding excessive heat styling
  • Minimizing exposure to chlorine (swimming pools) and saltwater

Which one is right for me?

The honest answer: it depends on your hair texture, your lifestyle, and the look you’re going for. A professional consultation at a trusted salon is always the best first step. A good stylist will assess your hair, understand what you want, and recommend the most suitable option  not just the most expensive one.

A Note on Professional Training

As a client, knowing these differences helps you make informed decisions. As a beauty professional or aspiring stylist, understanding the chemistry, technique, and aftercare behind each treatment is what separates a good outcome from a great one.

At Infiniti Salon Academy, hair treatments like these form a core part of our practical curriculum. Students don’t just learn what these treatments are, they learn how to assess hair type, choose the right formula, apply it correctly, and guide clients through aftercare. Because when it comes to chemical treatments, the skill of the person holding the brush matters just as much as the product in the bowl.
